Thanks man!
As it’s my first hydro system I have had to change my thinking a bit about runoff. What I mean is, say, daily measurements. So I check pH and ppm today, then check again same time tomorrow. Conceptually this is the same as measuring your in and out in a soilless grow, I think.
What are your thoughts about the ppm levels? They are clones that are around 2 to 3 weeks old. Do you think 700-800ppm is too high?
I check PH every day I am home with my grow. I adjust if it gets below 5.6 or above 6.2. If it’s between that, I will usually leave it alone, but it depends on the trends and stage of growth.
Quick update:
Going really well. Growth rate is insane.
pH around 5.8 for several days as I topped res off with water and brought ppm down from 800 to 640. Latest reading, pH down slightly 5.6 with ppm 620 and the plants have been doing progressively better. I think the jump from the cloner at 360ppm to 800ppm was too much.
They look really good, @Deece - nice work! The real challenge is that your plants are now getting to the size where their root balls will start to take up more and more space and you need to be mindful of your pipes remaining clear of roots so the water can flow properly.
And, I admit I have not managed water temperature at all. Though I have the master reservoir outside the grow tent the water hovers around 73-76 degF. What do you think of the color of the roots? The res color is quite red using GH flora series.
I’ve managed pH and ppm pretty well.
It has swung as low as 4.8-5.0 when I left it for a few days but pretty much keep it within 5.4-6.2 otherwise.
Ppm is now at 1000. The plants are drinking a lot more water than I thought they would and I am routinely adding about two gallons every 2-4 days. Is it better to top up daily to avoid the changing water levels?
I haven’t done a res change out yet but I will when I flip the lighting and get into flowering mode. @peachfuzz@dbrn32@Bogleg
Thanks again guys for the tips
Looks great to me - did you flip to flower already? If not, I recommend doing so ASAP.
They look healthy to me. I don’t see anything of concern.
Totally up to you. I usually do top offs only when needed (i.e. when the roots are starting to get exposed to air for more than a day or two).
You will want to keep track of PPMs before and after top offs. Your PPM readings BEFORE you add more water and AFTER you add more water will give you a lot of good data on how much your plants are eating.
I’m not one with s lot of scrog or any dwc experience, but everything looks ok to me. I agree you can probably get on to flowering if you aren’t already
Thanks @Bogleg!
I’ve started transitioning to flowering per your advice. What’s the risk of pushing veg any further?
To your point about tracking ppm before and after topping off res, I hear you, but wouldn’t it be more valuable to measure ppm after a top-off, but before the next top-off? Maybe that’s what you meant.
Going to drain and replenish reservoir in the next few days. There is a bit of film inside the res so I am going to fill it with plain pHd water, add GH floricleen, then drain and replenish with water and add nutes. If anyone has any advice or feedback with respect to res change outs let me know as this will be my first go at it. I assume the roots can handle being exposed to air for an hour or two…
Sounds good. You can go a little longer - as long as 24 hours if you want.
Also, to answer your earlier question - the roots can be fine without any water on them for several hours (in my ebb and flow system they go for 12 hours every day with no water).
Question, How does this scrog layout look? There is some unevenness in the canopy… but at what point do you stop trying to tuck new growth under the net? It’s a chore Also, am I good to do some delaminating of bigger fan leaves?
Also,
What are your thoughts on microbials?
Do you prefer a probiotic, or sterile reservoir?
I have a worm farm and produce all kinds of worm castings. Thinking about brewing up a batch of aerated compost tea (would be my first) but I’d like to hear your thoughts on it before I go down that road. @Bogleg@peachfuzz@Oldguy
Better wait for the other guys on the microbial s @Deece. My next grow is going to be water and not sure.
I’m still researching and gathering some stuff.
Clean up everything under the canopy a little more…
And clone them…
3 weeks and your done tucking…
So if you haven’t reached 3 weeks yet , just super crop them until your happy with the evenness of the canopy …
Plants look good…
No , I would not introduce a organic or worm poop to a hydro system…
It’s for microbes that live in soil… not for hydro or dwc or rdwc or nft…
Try it if you want , but water growing and media growing are very different…
I do use beneficial microbes , orca and hydrogard…
But that’s it…
But I only grow in water with (no) media…
I have used Hydroguard for several grows and it has always done what it’s supposed to do, as near as I can tell. I haven’t ever had any root issues since I started using it.
However, for the past two or three grows now I’ve been using Hygrozyme… which is ungodly expensive and a little does not go a long way… and I have to say, I have never had root growth and health like I am seeing since I started using it. So regretfully I am bolstering my “cheap” powdered nutrient strategy with exotic and expensive supplements, so there’s that.
Re: your plants - I expect they will grow a lot taller, so to second @peachfuzz, I would keep tucking for another two weeks. Personally, I am a “schwazzing” sort of guy so I would remove quite a few fan leaves in the canopy, especially if they are jammed up into one another. Leaves like a little elbow room too, I imagine.
