Ive actually kept downsizing over the years lol, especially with TSS loads. Last year i got stevens 301 turkey 410. 4 birds in 12 days ranging from 13 yards to a little over 50 yards. I honestly think past 30 yards its hitting harder than my 12 gauge lol. Never would have imagined taking a 50 yard shot with a 410 but she a little demon lol.

I have the matching rifle in .204 Ruger. Insanely accurate, and the most fun prairie dog rifle.

Mannnnn prairie dogs are on my bucket list!!! Ive never had a 204, ive seen the bullets at walmart but ive never shot one. Ive got a 17hmr that i bet would do good for prairie dogs. I tacked a squirrel with it at close to 200 yards. I wish it was center fire. I could save alot of deer meat lol.

It’s a really fun shooter. I reload so ammo is affordable. I load with the polymer tipped projectiles so it’s quite a show when the rats get hit. I use .223 as well but with the added power, the projectiles pass through the dogs without the violent decapitation of the .204. Being a single shot, I don’t go through anywhere near as much ammo as the semi’s or bolt guns.

I have a .17 Fireball, it does 4140 fps, I’ve killed several deer with it, head and neck, they just wilt. Fine groundhog gun too.

I bet the 17hmr would too at under 100 yards. Its just illegal to try it here lol.

I’m with @TheAbu95 never been prairie dog hunting before is it like plink city?

Yep, That’s exactly how it is. Set yourself up on a folding shooting bench in the pasture by the dog towns and plink away. A good sized dog town can have thousands of dogs. They come out and sit on the mounds (entrances) to the tunnels. You can sit in one spot and pan 30 degrees or so back and forth as they pop up and out of the mounds. It’s like long range whack a mole. Shot can range anywhere from 50 to 800 yards. It’s best to have a few “Tools” with you as you’ll want to let the barrels cool down frequently.
